Kuantan (关丹) is the state capital of Pahang, situated near Kuantan River mouth and facing the South China Sea. Kuantan was part of the Chih-Tu Empire in the 1st Century, Pheng Kheng Empire in the 11th Century, the Siamese in the 12th and from the 15th Century, was ruled by the Malacca Empire.
Kuantan was established as Kampung Teruntum by Haji Senik in the 1850’s. The arrival of Chinese miners and traders in the late 19th Century saw the establishment of the township of Kuantan, Gambang and Sungai Lembing.
The Japanese also sunk HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse of the coast of Kuantan on 10th December 1941 at the height of World War II.
Tourism is one of Kuantan major economic activities and is famous for handicrafts, batik, keropok and salted fish. Agriculture, fishing and petrochemical industry also formed the backbone of Kuantan economy but hopefully not the largest rare earth refinery in the world.
